At the China Camp displacement shelter in Debre Birhan, thousands of internally displaced families continue to live in extremely difficult conditions. Many shelters, including those provided years ago, are now torn, leaking, and unable to protect families from heavy rain and cold weather. Rukiya Hassen, a mother of seven, says her family has been living in the same damaged tent for more than three years. During the rainy season, water enters the shelter, making daily life even more difficult. In response, Shewa Peace and Development in collaboration with Global Alliance for Ethiopian Rights distributed blankets and rain-protection tarpaulins worth 2.6 million birr to displaced families living in the China Camp, Woineshet, and Bakelelo shelters. According to organizers, many families are forced to live in overcrowded tents where they cook, eat, and sleep in the same small space while dealing with leaking roofs, mud, and cold temperatures. In 2018, conflict in southern Ethiopia displaced millions of people and created one of the country’s major humanitarian crises. Families were forced to leave their homes, communities were destroyed, and thousands faced an uncertain future. In response to the crisis, Global Alliance for Ethiopian Rights partnered with World Vision International to support displaced communities through shelter construction, rehabilitation, and peace-building efforts. The project resulted in the construction of 1,724 homes for displaced families, helping more than 10,000 people return to their villages and rebuild their lives. Alongside humanitarian assistance, peace and reconciliation programs were also introduced to strengthen community recovery and long-term stability. The Global Alliance for Ethiopian Rights has provided more than 3.5 million birr in emergency support to communities affected by drought in the North Gondar Zone of Ethiopia. Using funds raised through GoFundMe, food assistance including corn and nutritional supplies was delivered to the districts of Janamora, Telemt, and Dabat. Local officials say the combined impact of war and drought has left hundreds of thousands of people in urgent need of humanitarian support.
